Ostello di COSENZA - Re Alarico

I have hesitated writing...my experience was so awful. This Hostel, Ostello di COSENZA - Re Alarico, was a nightmare experience.

I was the only one in the dorm -- no problem there. But there had recently been someone smoking in there. The room stunk. It was not possible to open the only window. No circulation of air at all.

I was given a sheet for the bed but no pillowcase. I was not going to put my head on the filthy pillow without a clean pillowcase.

There was only one small trash can between 2 bathrooms and the dorm -- it was overflowing with trash all over the floor.

One of the bathroom doors did not close.

The shower had a part on the floor; no way was I going to be able to take a shower.

I asked the guy who "ran" the place a question about a bus. He told me to walk to the bus station and ask there (!!! hello !!! people come to Hostels so that they can get/exchange info from people who work there). I actually had arrived by bus. NO ONE spoke english at the bus station and that was why I was asking this guy the question. He looked something up on the Trenitalia website, but again, I wanted bus info, not train info. So what he found was not helpful. When I asked if he could help me look up some bus info and tell me what the website said (since they were all in Italian) he stated that there were too many and I needed to go find out for myself.

The website claims it has wi-fi. However the wi-fi did not reach the dorm and I needed to go down to the depressing, falling apart "lounge" to be able to access the wi-fi.

The pictures of this Hostel that appear on websites were clearly taken some time ago. Everything was filthy and falling apart. There was next to no light in the "lounge."

This Hostel GROSSLY MISREPRESENTED ITSELF.

The amount charged was outrageous for the condition of what I received.

I chose to leave early. I looked for the guy who took my payment who "ran" the place but he was no where to be found. The office was locked and I had no means to contact him.

I FEEL I SHOULD BE REFUNDED MY MONEY but preferred to just leave rather than look for him and stay at this ramshackle place.
It was dirty, in poor repair and felt unsafe.

I will also submit this on website but have no interest in argument with guy who "runs" the place. This was my experience. I have told every traveler I met to steer clear of this place.

The hostel was great, although it was really far from the train station. But that was just because the train station was not in the city center.
The room was nice, the kitchen was great and the staff was wonderful!

The hostel is difficult to find for strangers/foreigners. It is situated in an alley and the sign towards the hostel is not clearly visible. (we passed it 3 times, before noticing)

Ostello re Alarico is located in the charming and historical old city of Cosenza, close to all of the city's major attractions. The hostel is in a very tastefully renovated building, with beatutiful furnishings,well-equipped kitchen and a beautiful outdoor garden area. Staff are helpful and friendly. Internet facilities are provided and information on local sites of interest is available. Breakfast was the only dissappointment, consisting of cold coffee and a packaged "croissant". A bit of local fruit and fresh bread would have been a much better way of starting the day. Nonetheless, I would highly recommend the not only the hostel, but the City of Cosenza and the surrounding countryside as a stimulating holiday destination.
